contributions to the genres of rock and avant garde classical music. He's
been a conductor and composer for numerous pop, rock and prog-rock projects,
including Ken Ayers's Joy of a Toy (1969) and Mike
Oldfield's Tubular Bells (1973), as well as Elvis Costello, Roy
Harper, A-ha, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Madness and
Billy Bragg, among others. Bedford also composed avante garde classical works
like Star Clusters, Nebulae and Places in Devon (1971) and the audience
participation piece With 100 Kazoos (1971) and began recording his own
music in the early 1970s, including orchestral pieces like Star's End
(1974) and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1975), that became
popular hits. Bedford was also Composer in Residence at Queen's College in
London, England from 1969 to 1981 and has provided music for TV and movies,
including The Killing Fields (1984) and Absolute Beginners (1986).
British conductor and violinist RIGNOLD (1905-1976) got his start playing
violin in jazz and dance bands in the 1920s and 1930s (his recordings include
Oh Lady, Be Good and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, both in 1926, with
the Jack Hylton Orchestra), but is best known as the Musical Director of the
Royal Ballet (1957-1960) and conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra. He made the jump from jazz to classical music in 1944, when he
got a chance to conduct the Palestine Orchestra, now the Israel Philharmonic.
His other posts include staff conductor at the Covent Garden (1947-1948) and the
Liverpool Philharmonic (now the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic) in the 1940s and
1950s. Composer, conductor and pianist SCHURMAN, born in 1924, lived in
Great Britain for most of his life before settling in the U. S. in 1981. His
works include orchestral works like Six Studies of Francis Bacon (1968),
Variants (1970) and The Gardens of Exile (1989-1990); the
opera-cantata Piers Plowman (1979-80); the choral cantata, The Double
Heart (1976); the orchestral song-cycle Chuench'l (1967); and Nine
Slovak Songs (1988) for tenor, sorpano and orchestra. He has composed and
orchestrated music for movies, including Exodus (1960), Lawrence of
Arabia (1962) and The Bedford Incident (1965). English tenor BOWEN
can be heard on many classical recordings, including BBC symphony Handel's
Messiah. He became a Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of
Music in 1967, was Head of Vocal Studies there from 1987 to 1991.
