DAVID LYNN
As Architect of the Capitol, he offers to send air raid shelter information to the Chief Justice of the US Court of Appeals.
Typed Letter signed: "David Lynn" as Architect of the Capital, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D. C., 1942 January 26. On official letterhead to Honorable D. Lawrence Groner, Chief Justice, US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, in full: "The Committee on Emergency Protection of Public Buildings, of which W. E. Reynolds, Commissioner of Public Buildings, is chairman, is making a survey of public buildings in the District of Columbia for the purpose of locating and designating spaces in the buildings where employees should go in time of air raids. If you desire, this office will be pleased to forward to this Committee plans of the United States Court of Appeals Building and request that a survey be made of this building for the above-mentioned purpose. Yours very truly". After 21 years on the staff, David Lynn (1873-1961) was appointed Architect of the Capitol by President Coolidge in 1923, serving in that post until 1954. Lynn's administration saw addition of four new buildings to the Capitol complex: the Supreme Court Building, the Longworth House Office Building, the US Botanic Garden Conservatory, and the John Adams Building (annex to the Library of Congress.) He supervised a major remodeling of House and Senate Chambers (1949-1951), and improvements like underground parking. Heavily toned. Surface creases. Small tear on top left corner. Normal mailing folds. Stains along margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
