DAVID SHARPE
Album leaf signed "With sincerest best wishes and good cheer" by actor and veteran stuntman David Sharpe
Autograph note signed "To Maybell-/With sincerest best/wishes and good cheer/David Sharpe" in pencil.5¾x4¼, rounded right corners, binder holed in left edge. Summing up the career of Sharpe (1910-1980) is a tall order. He appeared in over 160 movies and TV shows between 1923 and 1974 and has stunt credits in over 230, many of them overlapping... and some of our sources claim that he may have been seen in at least 4,500! The winner of two A. A. U. tumbling championships, Sharpe was a gifted athlete; one of his later roles was as a somersaulting little old lady on The Red Skelton Show (1966-1969). He could be a stunt double for almost anyone, including Tony Curtis, W. C. Fields, Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels, Bob Steele, Tim Holt, Marlon Brando, Alan Ladd, Tyrone Power, Jackie Cooper, Douglas Fairbanks Junior and Senior, even Frances Gifford! Sharpe was also stunt coordinator for Republic Pictures from 1939 to 1942 and appeared in numerous serials, often doing his own stuntwork; you can see his work in classic serials like The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941) and Spy Smasher (1942). Trekkies may recognize him (or not), as a redshirt in the 1968 Star Trek episode Day of the Dove and as James Daly's stunt double in the 1969 episode Requiem for Methuselah. He was also one of only two actors from the original series to appear in 1953's War of the Worlds, the other being Charles Stewart (how's that for useless trivia?). Sharpe died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 1980. Lightly toned, foxed, soiled, creased and bowed. Random pencil marks. Otherwise in fine condition.
