DEBORAH KERR
The six time Academy Award nominated actress writes a letter to a friend about memories, old friends and work, adding "Have read three revival ideas, two new plays, a movie and a T.V. and hate them all!!! Lucky Idiot that I am I can say 'No'. But with the way the world is going I don't know how long THAT will last!"
Autograph Letter signed: "With great affection Deborah", 1 page, 8x11½. Malaga, Spain, 1974 May 2. To My Dearest Laura, In full: "Your lovely newsy letters and the marvelous photos with extra pages for the book have all caught up with me here, where we are busy building on a studio for Peter to the dear little, very old cottage that we bought some years ago. I cannot thank you enough for ALL your thoughtfulness (and WORK) in doing the book! I should never have had time to do anything approaching it myself, and it will forever be a marvelous remembrance of what was, for me, an absolutely wonderful experience. I had a huge lump in my throat looking at the new ones you sent. I still miss it all so very much, and wonder if I shall ever QUITE get over it all! I haven't much news....you know I went to London and saw that Hazel....we had a great time, and went for a walk in Hyde Park on our first re-union and WHO do we walk into but Emlyn Williams! Isn't it a crazy coincidence! I shall look forward so much to reading the play, and my GOD no! Don't pay those prices for the air-mail!! I am so glad you have been doing things that interest and stimulate you, and I shall long to hear how your various auditions and projects develop. Of course my first stop in the theatre was to see my old stage-managing team who are with Ingrid in the Constant Wife. The play has some really marvelous wit and wisdom about marriage in it considering WHEN it was written... it is not very well staged, and Ingrid never HAS been able to read a funny line right! But it's enjoyable and the old lady part (the Mother. I forget the name) is brilliantly played and VERY funny. I saw many shows 'Equus' being the most cleverly staged and with an extraordinary performance by the young boy. He is coming to N.Y. in it and it is really worth seeing. Ah! A BIT obvious....the Freudian connections....one sees it all coming and why....but outstandingly out staged. Get wildly funny letters and cards from Billy Biskup! He is a scream! And I must write to him soon. A rather sotto voce letter from Michael....I gather Warren has been working hard at getting Vickery back, and she I think is in that unenviable state of loving two men at the same time! Brenda is with her falling mother and I had a particularly sweet letter from Bill Bryden. I had not expected him to be so sentimental! I will write to Dear Janette to thank her for the photos, but if you see her in the meantime tell her I WILL be writing. Everything is a bit hectic, as my step-daughter Christin suddenly decided to get married! And so a big wedding in Philadelphia is to take place on the 25th of May! Peter and I of course will be there as well as footing the bill! Thank god neither Francesca or Melanie have any intention of either marriage or having a big society wedding! Ridiculous...all that money going to feed masses of rich people that I don't even know, and which the kids could USE as he is only STARTING medical School! But what can one do??? So we leave here about the 19th ...go to Klosters to get our city things, and fly to N.Y. on the 23rd. Then back here on the 27th! Whew! Have read three revival ideas, two new plays, a movie and a T.V. and hate them all!!! Lucky Idiot that I am I can say 'No'. But with the way the world is going I don't know how long THAT will last! Darling.....much much love to you...I too think of you very often and sincerely miss you.....do keep in touch...." Deborah Kerr (1921-2007), was born Deborah Jane Trimmer in Scotland. She was trained as a ballerina. However, she soon discovered that she was more interested in drama and began playing minor roles in Shakespearean productions. Kerr, who made her film debut in Major Barbara (1941), typically played reserved, well-bred ladies. On the strength of her sensitive portrayal of a nun in Black Narcissus (1947), she was brought to Hollywood to play the lead opposite Clark Gable in The Hucksters. Kerr received Best Actress Academy Award nominations for six films: Edward, My Son (1949), From Here to Eternity (1953), The King and I (1956), Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1959), Separate Tables (1958) and The Sundowners (1960). Accompanied by an envelope postmarked May 3, 1974. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned at folds and left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
