DON WEIS and GEORGE SIDNEY
Just beating the deadline, and under threat of suspension by the Directors Guild, Weis reports $73,049 in directing income for 1962, on a form previously signed by Guild President George Sidney.
Document signed: "Don Weis", 1 page, 8½x11. Also signed "George Sidney". Los Angeles, California, circa 1963. Documentary letter from the Directors Guild of America, dated 1962 December 16, reminding Weis that he has not submitted his require statement of earnings for 1962, required for dues computation, and that he will be suspended from the organization if this information is not supplied within 30 days. Weis has responded, reporting $73,049 in income as a director in 1962, returning the form just before the deadline (receipt stamp dated 1963 January 13). The dunning notice has been signed by Sidney as President of the Directors Guild. DON WEIS (1922-2000) got his start in film work with the US Army in World War II. His first full-length film as director was Bannerline (1951); his last was The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966). While his big screen resume was not especially impressive, his TV credits are. These include directing multiple episodes of many series, including - to name only a few: The Thin Man, The Jack Benny Program, The Andy Griffith Show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Batman, Ironside, Starsky and Hutch, M*A*S*H, Hawaii Five-0, Fantasy Island. The Love Boat and Remington Steele. The Directors Guild itself honored him twice with its award for best TV directing: for Jane Wyman Presents (1956) and Schlitz Playhouse (1958). GEORGE SIDNEY (1916-2002) received four nominations from the Directors Guild Outstanding Directing Achievement in a Motion Picture (for Show Boat (1951), Scaramouche (1952), Young Bess (1953) and The Eddy Duchin Story (1956). He later earned a lifetime achievement award from the Guild, as well as a Golden Apple and a Golden Globe. Sidney was especially adept at MGM musicals, including the director's chair in Annie Get Your Gun, Show Boat, Kiss Me Kate, The Eddie Duchin Story, Pal Joey, Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas. Notches at right and bottom edges. Toned near top left edge. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
