DORIS DAY
The famous actress and singer who began her entertainment career as a dancer signed this check made out to Beverly Dairies
Check Signed: "Doris Day" in blue ink. 6x3½. Dated April 18, 1951. Paid to Beverly Dairies in the amount of $22.21 with a check from the Hollywood Main Office of the Bank of America. Known for her wholesome, "girl-next-door" good looks and sparkling personality, Doris Day (1922-2019) was one of the most popular and highest paid actresses by the early 1950s. After her would-be dancing career was sidelined by a car accident that injured her legs, Day turned to singing, first touring with bands and then introducing hit after hit in a string of romantic comedies. For over a decade, her singles could regularly be seen towards the top of the United States Billboard Hot 100, including an astounding five songs that reached the #1 spot. Her musical talents led to screen roles in television and film: she made her screen debut in 1948's Romance on the High Seas. Nominated for an Academy Award for Pillow Talk (1959), she brightened up the silver screen opposite such romantic leading men as Rock Hudson and Cary Grant. That Touch of Mink (1962), a romantic comedy with a strong supporting cast, features Day trying to coax a wedding proposal out of wealthy playboy Grant. Her hit from the Alfred Hitchcock movie The Man Who Knew Too Much, "Que Sera, Sera" (translated to Whatever Will Be, Will Be), won a 1956 Oscar for Best Original Song. As her singing career began to taper off, she was given her own television series in 1967, which aired as The Doris Day Show from 1968-1973. Since her performance career died down, she has concentrated on her passion for animal welfare, forming the Doris Day Pet Foundation (now known as the Doris Day Animal Foundation) in 1978. In 1987, she established a complementary organization called the Doris Day Animal League to lobby for legislation benefiting animals. This latter organization merged with The Humane Society of the United States in 2006. In recognition of her incredible music and acting career, she was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1989. Lightly toned. Regular hole punches and perforations. Otherwise, fine condition.
