DOUGLAS FRASER
In a typed letter, he talks about setting up a meeting with Chrysler
President Lee Iacocca.
Typed Letter signed: "Douglas A. Fraser" as President of the United
Auto Workers Union, 1 page, 8½x11. Detroit, Michigan, 1981 February 2.
On UAW letterhead, US union-made paper, to Charles Russhon, New York, N.Y.
In full: "I have your letter of January 26, to which no copy of a
letter to Mr. Lee Iacocca was attached. However, I don't think it is necessary.
My schedule is extremely difficult, as I am sure is Mr. Iacocca's. When you get
some possible dates from him, let me know and we will try to put our schedules
together. Sincerely". The Scottish-born Fraser, whose family settled in
Detroit when he was a child, became active in the United Auto Workers (UAW),
rising through the ranks and earning respect as chief negotiator in union
disputes with Chrysler Corp. President of the UAW from 1977-1983, Fraser was
also a member of Chrysler's Board of Directors from 1980-1984, the first union
leader elected to such a post. Lee Iacocca had become Chrysler CEO in
1979. With the help of a government bail-out and some good new product
lines, he helped the company return to what proved to be temporary
profitability. He and Fraser would have had frequent contact over the
negotiating table and at Chrysler board meetings. Charles J. Russhon
(1911-1982), a retired Air Force officer, is best remembered as the liaison for
five Jame Bond films between 1963 and 1973. It was he who obtained the US Army's
consent to film on location Goldfinger's assault on Fort Knox (1964).
What Russhon had in mind in seeking a meeting with the Chrysler CEO and UAW head
is unknown. Clearly, they didn't need Goldfinger's help to secure US gold. Type
has bled slightly. Several small ink stains in lower left corner. Otherwise,
fine condition.
