EARL KINTNER
Note written by the Federal Trade Commission Chairman in blue ink: "Thank you for an easy interview, done with outstanding professional-ism". With a small b/w magazine photo of Earl Kintner affixed.
Autograph note signed "Earl W. Kintner/Chairman Federal Trade/Commission" in blue ink. Blue ink notations in unknown hand. 1 page, 7¾x8¼. With 3¼x4¼ b/w magazine photo of Kintner affixed near bottom left corner. In full:"Thank you for an easy interview, done with outstanding professional-/ism." Kintner (1912-1991, born near Croydon, Indiana) was chairman of the Federal Trade Commission during the final years of President Dwight Eisenhower's administration (1956-61). Kintner supported self-regulation of the financial market, but was also a vigorous trustbuster. He summed up this seemingly contradictory approach in an interview: "Self-policing is no good unless there's a cop on the corner with a big stick, who's willing to use it." His agency issued a then-record number of complaints and orders in fiscal year 1960 aimed at false advertising, deceptive trade practices and monopolistic activities. He also repeatedly called on the television industry to curb false and misleading advertising at the risk of formal investigation. Lightly toned and creased. Discoloration at right edge, which touches signature. Handwriting, but not signature, is cut off at top edge but legible. Page was torn from guestbook at right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
