ED LOPAT
He signs a typed letter accepting for his team an invitation from Kirk Douglas
Typed Letter signed: "Ed Lopat", 1 page, 8½x11. Kansas City, Missouri, 1963 June 10. On letterhead of Kansas City Athletics to Kirk Douglas, Paramount Pictures, Inc., Hollywood, California. In full: "It was a wonderful gesture on your part to extend the invitation to the fellows on our ball club to visit your studios. I have checked with the boys and sixteen of them would like to come out on Monday, June 17. As they will not have transportation, they would appreciate transportation being arranged for them. They will be ready to leave at 2:00 P.M. on that day. Again we do appreciate your invitation and we are looking forward to visiting with you on June 17. Sincerely." A left-handed pitcher who spent 12 years in the Major Leagues (1944-1956), Lopat was a key part of the five consecutive World Championship New York Yankee teams of 1949-1953. All All-Star in 1951, when he won a career high 21 games, Lopat led the league in earned run average two years later (2.42). Lopat threw mostly slow, breaking balls. He was reportedly the pitcher Ted Williams least liked to face. Yankee manager Casey Stengel liked to put "the Junk Man" in his rotation between fireballers, Allie Reynolds and Vic Raschi, to befuddle opposing batters. Lopat managed the Kansas City A's for two seasons (1963-1964). Lopat's A's had a free day on June 17, 1963 before playing the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium on the 18th and 19th. (The A's split a double header on Wednesday the 19th to salvage one win in the 3-game series.) Pencil notation (unknown hand) in upper left corner. Fine condition.
