ERNIE SHORE
Partly Printed Check filled out and signed: "E.G. Shore," 6x23/4. Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1971 January 21.Drawn on his account at the Commercial & Farmers' Bank, payable for $45.02 to Piedmont Nat. Gas Co. On June 23, 1917, in the first game of a doubleheader at Washington's National Park (later Griffith Stadium), Boston Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth walked the first Washington Senators batter he faced. Arguing ball four, Ruth slugged the umpire in the jaw and was ejected. After ERNIE SHORE came in from the bullpen, the runner on first was caught stealing for the first out, and Shore retired the next 26 batters to win the game 4-0. Shore had pitched a nine-inning perfect game but faced only 26 batters! Large red bank stamp on front, and light show through from purple
stamp on verso, but completely legible and fine condition.
