EUGEN D'ALBERT and MARIE VON BULOW
D'Albert's autograph sentiment in German on one side of an album leaf; a handwritten poem by Mrs. Von Bulow in archaic German script on verso
Autograph Sentiment signed (in German, translated): "for the kind remembrance/of/Eugen d'Albert/Leipzig 30 December 1883", and on verso Autograph Poem signed: "Marie v. Bulow/geb [born] Schanzer/8 March 84", SIZE? album leaf. Von Bulow's 4-line verse is written in the archaic Sutterlin script, not readable by modern Germans without special training. Eugen D'Albert (1864-1932) was a Scottish-born German virtuoso pianist and composer best known for his opera Tiefland (1903). He was the youngest pianist ever to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic. His compositions included two piano concertos, a cello concerto, a symphony, two string quartets, and 21 operas. Marie von Bulow (born Schanzer, 1857-1941), the daughter of an Austrian Defense Minister, was an actress in the court theater of Meiningen when she met and married orchestra conductor Hans von Bulow (1830-1894), a champion of Tchaikovsky who would later direct the Berlin Philharmonic. After her husband's death, she edited his papers and returned to the stage (and to character roles in early silent films). Edges lightly frayed and toned. Corners worn. The left side of the corners are missing. There is a middle notch. Adhesive residue on all edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
