EUGENE HALE
Eugene Hale, U. S. Representative and Senator from Maine, wrote this letter of introduction on U. S. Senate Chamber stationery to a fellow senator.
Autograph letter signed "Eugene Hale". Black ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 pages, 7¾x9¾, on U. S. Senate stationery. Addressed to an unknown senator (name is illegible). In full: "My dear Senator Let me introduce with this Hon Joseph G Manly of [illegible] know & who counts to walk with you on a business [illegible] I commend him unreservedly Yours truly". Hale (1836-1918) was a Republican U. S. Representative from Maine's 5th Congressional District (1869-1879) and U. S. Senator from Maine (1881-1911), as well as a member of Maine's state house of representatives (1867-1868 and 1879-1880). The chairman of several U. S. Senate committees, Hale is probably best remembered for helping to expand and modernize the U. S. Navy. President Rutherford B. Hayes even offered him the post of Secretary of the Navy, a post that he declined. Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased.Missing bottom left corner. Lightlydiscolored along left and right edges. Ink stains on verso (no show-through). Folded twice vertically and thrice horizontally and unfolded. Light separations at folds along edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
