Autograph Note signed: "To Kayo/Best wishes/always,/Sincerely,/Evie Johnson", 4½ x 3 overall, 1½ x 2½ color magazine photo affixed to card. Evie Johnson (1914-2004), born Eve Abbott, was a stage actress of the 1930s who earned greater notoriety for her two contentious Hollywood marriages. She debuted on Broadway in Romeo and Juliet(1935), and met her first husband, Keenan Wynn, on the set of The Star-Wagon two years later, They married in 1939. Evie dropped her own career to serve as agent for Wynn, a role in which she was very successful. But the marriage was unhappy, with Wynn later stating, "I was her hobby rather than hubby." In 1947 she divorced Wynn, marrying his best friend, fellow actor Van Johnson the next day. She finally acknowledged in 1999 that Louis B. Mayer, described by her as having "the morals of a cockroach," had contrived this marriage to conceal Van Johnson's gay orientation. The Johnson's stayed married for 20 years, and even had a son, but engaged in what Van Johnson called "the ugliest divorce in Hollywood history" in 1968. Corners worn. Lightly soiled. Otherwise fine condition.
