Postmarked Washington, District of Columbia, December 28, 1961. Stamp below postmark reads “Science and a Talent for Mercy” above an RN symbol. 4¢ stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Addressed to a collector in Alabama. Florence Price Dwyer (1902-1976) was a U.S. congresswoman from New Jersey who served from 1957 to 1973. After taking special courses at Rutgers Law School, Dwyer served as the state legislation chairman of the New Jersey Federation of Business and Professional Women. Soon after, she became a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly (1950-1956) and served on the United States Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (1959-1973). Elected as a Republican to the 85th Congress, Dwyer was reelected to the seven succeeding Congresses. She was once quoted to have said, "A Congresswoman must look like a girl, act like a lady, think like a man, speak on any given subject with authority and most of all work like a dog."
