A rare signature from the English scholar and classics professor
Signature: "Frederick Apthorp Paley, M.A., LL.D/August 29, 1884.", in black ink, 5x2¾. English scholar Frederick Apthorp Paley (1815-1888) was educated at St. John's College, but left when he converted to Catholicism in 1846. He eventually returned in 1860 to resume his studies and was eventually appointed as professor of classical literature at the Roman Catholic University. However, the university was closed due to insufficient funds, and Paley moved to Boscombe where he spent the remainder of his life. He wrote works on classics such as Hesiod, Homer's Illiad, Euripides,and Theocritus. He also was knowledgeable on architecture, and published two works on Gothic Architecture. Corners and edges slightly worn and frayed. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
