Envelope signed: "Sidney Kirkman", 6½x3½. Envelope bearing 20-cent US
flag stamp, postmarked US Capitol, Washington, D.C., September 3, 1982.
General Sir Sidney Kirkman (1895-1982) won a Military Cross during World
War I service in France and Italy, rising to the rank of major. In World War
II, he commanded artillery forces in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, promoted
to command of the British XIII Corps in the latter campaign. After the war
he served as Deputy Chief of Staff and as Quartermaster General of the Forces
before taking charge of Britain's civil defense program (1954-1960). Ink
lightly smeared but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
