The Chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission writes to the President of the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation on the occasion of his resignation.
Typed Letter signed: "Glenn" as Chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1967 May 29. On letterhead of the United States Atomic Energy Commission addressed to Mr. Phillip Sporn, President, Ohio Valley Electric Corporation. In Full: "On the occasion of your resignation as President of OVEC, speaking for the Commission and myself personally, I would like to say how much we have enjoyed working with you during your many years as President of OVEC. We have appreciated the integrity, fairness and cooperation which have characterized all of your dealings with the Commission. These factors no doubt have contributed significantly to the attain-ment of the original objective of OVEC-that of supplying low-cost electric power to Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant from a privately owned source. Your forceful leadership, I am sure, led to the timely completion of OVEC's generating and transmission facilities, thereby enabling OVEC to meet the Commission's power requirement during a period of national emergency. This is a record you can be proud of. I am pleased to note from your letter that you will continue to maintain interest in the Commission's program. We look forward to working with you in the future as need arises in connection with the Civilian Nuclear Power Program and other matters of mutual interest. Cordially," Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-1999) won a 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work as co-discoverer of elements #94 Plutonium (in 1941), #95 Americium, #96 Curium, #97 Berkelium and #98 Californium. Later, he played a part in creating elements #99 Einsteinium, #100 Fermium, #101 Mendelevium and #102 Nobelium. In 1994, a new element (#106 Seaborgium) was named after him, the first time the honor has been bestowed upon a living person. Seaborg worked on the Manhattan Project developing the atomic bomb, but signed a letter to President Truman urging that the bomb be dropped on a barren island as a demonstration. He chaired the Atomic Energy Commission (1961-1971) and helped negotiate the nuclear test ban treaty of 1963. He advised every President from Truman to Clinton.
