GODFREY WINN
Journalist Godfrey Winn wrote and signed a short note on the back of this post card advertising his book The Young Queen to a resident of Malta. Printed with a 2-inch diameter bust photo of Winn.
Post card signed "Godfrey Winn" in blue ink. 6x4½. With a 2-inch b/w photo of Winn printed in top right corner. On verso of a post card advertising Winn's book The Young Queen. Postmarked London, England, Nov. 4, 1952. Addressed to Den L. Scerri-Owen, Malta. In full: "I do hope you will enjoy reading my new book 'The Young Queen', as much as I enjoyed writing it. Anyway, the pictures are wonderful Sincerely,". Winn (1908-1971), who became Britain's highest-paid journalist, also hosted an early British TV show, Godfrey Winn Speaking Personally, appeared in several films and wrote a number of books, including biographies of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. His columns in the Daily Express and women's magazines reached millions of readers, and Winn was also a noted war correspondent during World War II. One of his books, P.Q. 17, gives his eyewitness account of what became known as the "most murderous convoy"; of 33 ships that left Iceland, only nine escaped destruction by German U-boats. His war volumes also include Scrapbook of Victory and Home from the Sea, and he also detailed some of his experiences in his autobiography, The Infirm Glory (1967, volume one) and The Positive Hour (1970, volume two). Winn is also known for his long relationship with author W. Somerset Maugham. Lightlytoned, soiled, creased and bowed. Ink transference, which touches body of note but not signature. Show-though from postal marks, which do not touch signature or body of note. Light tears in left and bottom edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
