GUIOMAR NOVAES PINTO
A year before her death, she writes to recommend a forthcoming Carnegie Hall performance a young Brazilian pianist to a New York Times music critic.
Typed Letter signed: "Guiomar Novaes Pinto", 1 page, 8½x12. Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1978 January 25. On personal letterhead of Guiomar Novaes to Raymond Ericson, The New York Times, New York, N. Y. In full: "May I take this opportunity to introduce Claudio Richerme who, in my opinion, is one of the outstanding Brazilian pianists of this generation. I have had many opportunities to evaluate his extraordinary qualities, not only as a recitalist but also as a soloist with orchestra. He has spontaneity and simplicity of performance along with a profound and secure interpretation. I shall very much appreciate your attention to this young compatriot, probably one of the most promising I have ever known. I have the pleasure to invite you for his next performance at Carnegie Hall, that will be held on March 11 at 5:45. With many thanks, most sincerely yours". Brazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes Pinto, 1895-1979, won first place in the competition for admittance to the Paris Conservatory in 1909, already exhibiting an accomplished and distinctive style. By 1910, she was performing all over Europe. Returning to Brazil at the start of World War I, she made her New York City debut in 1915, to critical acclaim, earning the sobriquet "Paderewski of the Pampas". In 1922, she married civil engineer Octavio Pinto, himself an accomplished pianist. Annually through the 1960s, she gave a single concert at Carnegie Hall each December, with fans standing in long lines in the snow for tickets. Novaes Pinto, considered one of the great pianists of the 20th century, was especially well known for her interpretations of Schumann, Debussy and Chopin, a collection of the latter recently re-issued on compact disc. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light surface crease. Small tear along edges. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
