H. JOHN HEINZ III
Signed, typed letter (1981) to retired Ambassador Ben Hill Brown, who had
attended a conference organized by Heinz
Typed Letter signed: "John Heinz" as US Senator, 1 page, 8½x11.
Washington, D.C., 1981 November 13. On Senate letterhead to Ambassador
Ben Hill Brown, Alexandria, Virginia. In full: "Let me express my
personal thanks to you for attending the 'Successor Generation' conference
organized by me on November 3. I think the conference offered a forum for some
useful interchange of ideas, and I am very pleased at both the turnout and the
response. I hope you gained - as I did - some new insight into both the
inter-generational and the international aspects of the problem. I am convinced
that, on both sides of the Atlantic, we need to work harder to achieve mutual
understanding. I hope that soon we will see an American initiative to complement
the German program outlined by Dr. Hamm-Bruecher. Thank you again for coming to
the conference. If you have any further thoughts or suggestions on the Successor
Generation Problem, please don't hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely".
Henry John Heinz III (1938-1991), grandson and namesake of the H. J.
Heinz who founded the food company, attained an MBA from Harvard Business
School, taught at Carnegie Mellon University, and worked in the finance and
marketing divisions of Heinz Corp. He represented Pennsylvania in the US
House of Representatives (1971-1977) and Senate (1977-1991). Heinz died when
the private plane he was flying collided in mid-air with a helicopter. His
widow, Teresa, later married US Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate
John Kerry. Ben Hill Brown (1914-1989) was a career foreign service
officer who served as US Ambassador to Liberia from 1964 until his retirement in
1969. Heinz' Successor Generation Conference, aimed at maintaining friendly
trans-Atlantic relations among youths in both countries, resulted in an expanded
German-US student exchange program, jointly funded by the legislatures of the
two countries. Normal mailing folds - passing through entire signature. Lightly
creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
