First Day Cover honoring Adlai Stevenson, postmarked Bloominton, Illinois,
October 23, 1965, 5 c stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Journalist Harry Scott
Ashmore (1916-1998) joined the staff of the Arkansas Gazette in 1947, and
soon became its executive editor. He soon developed a reputation as a
moderate liberal, and delivered a groundbreaking speech on civil rights to the
Southern Governors Conference in 1951. US Supreme Court Justices received
advanced copies of his book, The Negro and the Schools (1954), and Chief
Justice Warren later told Ashmore that the book had an impact on the Court's
desegregation rulings. He took a leave of absence to play a prominent role in
Adlai Stevenson's Presidential campaign of 1956. During the Little Rock
desegregation crisis of 1957, Ashmore's was a prominent voice calling for
compliance with the law, making him a favorite target in the speeches of
Governor Orville Faubus, a former friend. After leaving the Gazette in 1959,
Ashmore continued writing, and served as editor of the Encyclopedia Brittanica.
