HENRY HEWES
The Saturday Review Drama Desk president writes to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World, saying they would be delighted to have him as a member
Typed letter signed: "Henry Hewes", in blue felt tip, 1 page, 7¼x10½. July 30, 1969. New York City, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Willis: The Drama Desk would be delighted to admit you as a member. Would you please send a cheque in the amount of $10 payable to Drama Desk to Mr. Louis Chapin, 444 East 20th Street, New York, N.Y. 10009, stating that I have invited you to become a member, and that this cheque is to cover you 1969-1970 dues. He will then enroll you and send you a membership card. Cordially". Henry Hewes (1917-2006) was the President of the Drama Desk at the Saturday Review from 1955 to 1979. He was notable for being one of the first critics to take a large interest in regional theatre, and helped develop the American Theatre Critics Association, the Tony Award for regional theatre, and the American Theatre Wing's design awards. In addition to his work with the Saturday Review, Hewes also worked as Editor for the Best Plays annual anthology. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
