HENRY PLACIDE
The acclaimed nineteenth-century comedy actor signs on this program page for
Turnpike Gate, dated 1819!
Program page signed: "Henry Placide/ Ricmond December 19th 1819" in black ink. 1 page, 3½x6¼. Program from New York's Philadelphia Theatre show Turnpike Gate (1818). Referenced on back: "As played in Richmond July 14th 1820". Richmond, Virginia. December 10, 1819. Henry Placide (1799-1870) was born the son of a French variety actor and theatre manager, mading his first appearance onstage as a child as David in The Blind Bargain, and by 1814 at the age of 15 was already performing in New York City and national touring companies. He made his adult debut in 1823 as Zekiel Homespun in The Heir-at-Law at the Park Theatre, and grew to be one of the most polished and celebrated comedians of his day, in roles such as Bob Acres, Sir Anthony Absolute, Sir Peter Teazle and Sir Harcourt Courtly. It was said that Placide was "the only one who every trod the American stage perfectly irresistible in humor, and yet entirely free from grimace and buffoonery...no other actor has ever so completely exemplified our idea of what a genuine comedian should be". Very worn and soiled. Torn along edges. Stained throughout. Creased throughout. Fragile. Otherwise, fine condition.
