IAN HAY (JOHN) BEITH
The British author signs this album leaf in black ink
Autograph Sentiment signed: “Yours very sincerely/ Ian Hay Beith” in black ink, 6¼x3¾. Major General Ian Hay Beith (1876-1952), born John Hay Beith, was an author who was best known for his novels and plays. Before becoming a full-time writer, Berth studied at Cambridge and then became a schoolmaster. His first major success as an author came in 1907 when he published Pip. Several years later, Beith served in World War I and used his wartime experiences as material for the surprisingly light-hearted The First Hundred Thousand, which was published in 1915. Shortly after The First Hundred Thousand was released, Beith traveled to Washington, D.C. to work in the information section of the British War Mission. Continuing his military service, he also was the Director of Public Relations at the War Office during World War II. Although Beith's later publications were not nearly as successful as his earlier ones, his play Hattie Stowe, which was about the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe, enjoyed a short run after its publication in 1947. Additionally, his play Off the Record, a light-hearted comedy, ran for over 700 performances. Remaining signers merit further research. Left edge irregular from being neatly torn from album. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
