JACK L. WARNER
Jack L. Warner sends a typed letter to Mr. Wolfe Cohen asking for further explanation about the ticket sales in Germany about A Star is Born.
TLS: "Jack". 1p, 8½x11. Burbank, 1955 January 24. On Warner Bros. stationery to Wolfe Cohen at Warner Bros. in New York. Warner has attached a carbon of a report of Berlin, Germany, net receipts for A Star is Born, starring Judy Garland and James Mason (both Oscar nominated), showing weekly receipts going down. In full: "Re: the attached report, besides just giving the cold figures, can't they add a few more words about the reception of the film, contemplated results, whether the engagement is considered good, etc. No one will hold whoever makes up the reports to anything if the film does not come off but it is very difficult to judge whether the figures are good, bad ir indifferent without some further explanation. Best regards. Sincerely," With carbon of Cohen's reply about the foreign distribution of A Star is Born, in part: "The overall results from Berlin are good, but not sensational...." Brothers Harry, Sam, Albert and Jack L. Warner (1892-1978), who co-founded Warner Bros. in 1923, launched the sound era four years later with The Jazz Singer. Jack was head of production at Warner Bros. from 1923-1967, when he sold the studio to Seven Arts. Although he became famous for clashing with producers, writers and stars (including Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney), the studio produced a succession of movie classics during his tenure. Warner, who died in 1978, was also one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. All three sheets on thin paper. Fine condition. Three items.
