Signature: "Jas. C. Fargo" in brown ink. 5x2¾. James C.
Fargo (1829-1915) was the younger brother of William G. Fargo, co-founder
in 1850 of the American Express Company. In 1847, Fargo was granted control
of operations in Detroit. Four years later, when the company was organized as
Wells, Fargo & Co., Fargo was named Superintendent of Michigan operations. A
longtime employee of that company and manager of its New York operations, James
succeeded to the presidency of American Express upon his brother's death in
1881. He was succeeded as president in 1914 by George Chadbourne Taylor.
