Signature: "James G Fair/Nevada. 1887", 6¾x2½. James G. Fair (1831-1894), who had been born near Belfast, Ireland, went to California as a "forty-niner" at the age of 17. Fair, who spent the next 11 years mining, later moved to Virginia City, Nevada where he formed a partnership with John W. Mackay, J.C. Flood and William S. O'Brien in 1867. Purchasing control of the Bonanza and other mines, the yield of gold and silver while under his ownership was estimated at $200 million. Fair was a Democratic U.S. Senator from Nevada from 1881-1887.
