JAMES L. BUCKLEY
As newly elected US Senator, he signs a typed letter to a junior high school student
Typed Letter Signed: "James L. Buckley" as Senator-elect, 1 page, 7¼x10½. New York, December 21, 1970. The older brother of writer William F. Buckley, James Lane Buckley (1923-2023) defeated both the Democratic and Republican candidates in 1970 and served as Conservative U.S. Senator from New York from 1971-1977. As Senator, he authored the so-called Buckley Amendment, familiar to all educators as the strict limitation on release of student records. His first book, If Men Were Angels: A View from the Senate, was published in 1975. Buckley, who served as President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty from 1982-1985, became a Federal Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia circuit, in 1985. He has been inactive in this position since 1996, although he is still listed as a senior judge. Most recently, he had a copy of his book Saving Congress from Itself (2014) sent to every U.S. Senator office of the 114th Congress. Fine condition.
