JEAN DUBUFFET. TLS: "Jean Dubuffet", 1p, 8½x10½. Le Touquet, 1964 August 25. To Madame Ida Kar, London. In French, translated. In full: "You invited me to come to Le Touquet on August 25th but today is precisely August 25th. I am ready to leave Le Touquet in a few days (I do not know exactly what day) and therefore I think that it will be better we do our work in Paris. I will be there all through the month of September, I think. My plans are never exactly organized in advance. In any case it seems that Paris is better suited than Le Touquet is as a setting for our endeavors. Do you remember what address you sent the letter in which were enclosed the 20 enlargements? Is it the address of my secretarial office, 9 rue de Duras, Paris 8eme? For the moment my Paris office is closed; everybody is on vacation. It will reopen September 1st. At that time I want to do studies regarding the 20 enlargements which are strewn about. We will surely find them. Yours in friendship." Typewritten postscript initialed "JD": "Please excuse me if I ask you not to call me 'master', the term implies being involved in a point of view which I do not enjoy." At the time of this letter, French artist and sculptor Dubuffet was involved in a worldwide retrospective of his art. This included some of his "savage" works--portraits, landscapes and textural artwork. Creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "n" in Jean.
