JOANNA SIMON
Black and white photo signed by the skilled mezzo-soprano
Photograph signed: "Joanna Simon", in black felt tip, b/w, 8x10. Harry Beall Management, Inc. stamped on verso. Joanna Simon (1940-2022) is an American mezzo-soprano who currently works as a real estate broker in New York City. After vacillating between several different career paths, Simon began training to be an opera singer while attending Sarah Lawrence College. In 1962, she made her professional debut at the New York City Opera in a production of The Marriage of Figaro in the role of Cherubino. Also in 1962, Simon was awarded the Marian Anderson Prize. Simon's operatic career reached its apex in 1967 when she performed as the courtesan Pantasilea in the world premiere of Bomarzo by Alberto Ginastera. In addition to her operatic performances, Simon was famed for singing some of the most famous oratorios by major composers including Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. She once revealed in an interview that her favorite work was the St. Matthew Passion by Bach. Simon appeared on several television shows, and from 1986 to 1992 she was the Arts Correspondent with the Emmy-winning MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour. Corners lightly worn and bent. Otherwise, fine condition.
