Inscribed photograph signed "To 'Dud' and Betty:/This one is from second base to the plate - carrying bestest,/2/4/36". B/w, 10¾x13¾ overall, 10¼x13¼ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Brown (1892-1973, born Joseph Evans Brown in Holgate, Ohio) was a madcap comedian played vaudeville, burlesque, and the Broadway stage before breaking into films in 1928. His popularity peaked in the 1930s, but his performances continued into the TV era. Brown's films include The Circus Kid (1928), Show Boat (1951), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Some Like it Hot (1959) and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963). A former semipro baseball player, Brown appeared in several baseball films, including Elmer the Great (1933) and Alibi Ike (1935). During World War II, he toured tirelessly to entertain the troops. He made his last film, The Comedy of Terrors, in 1964. Lightly toned, soiled, silvered and creased. Lower left corner is irregular. Light tears in top and bottom corners and upper left and lower right corners. Tackhead-sized areas of paper loss in lower right corner. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Corners are worn and rounded. Light impressions on image. Otherwise in fine condition.
