JOHN BURNS
Note handwritten in 1908, while serving as the first working class member of a British Cabinet
Autograph Note signed: "Aug 6 1908/Dear Sir/I readily comply with/your request/Yours truly/John Burns", 6x4½. John Burns (1858-1943) was a British union activist who served in the House of Commons from 1892 to 1918, first elected on an Independent Labour ticket but later moving to the Liberal Party. Burns started out as a fiery militant, serving jail time for participation in violent demonstrations in the 1880s. As a parliamentarian, however, he espoused moderate reform measures, and served in Liberal Party Cabinet posts from 1905. He was the first working class member of a British Cabinet and of the Privy Council. A consistent opponent of war, he resigned from his post as President of the Board of Trade when Britain entered World War I. American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie granted him an annuity of £1,000 in 1919, allowing him to spend the rest of his life in research and writing, focused on the history of London and the Thames River. Toned and creased. Edges lightly frayed. Corners worn. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
