JOHN G. LAWLOR
This typed letter explaining how George Cohan and a Mr. Harris falsely claimed to donate a large sum to the 1906 San Francisco Fires is signed in green ink
Typed letter signed: "Jack Lawlor" in green ink. 2 pages, 10x8. San Francisco, January 28, 1941. In part: "Dear Mr. Sobol: It sure made me laugh to read your yarn a week or so back about Harris and Cohan autographing New York Journals twelve thousand dollars worth for the benefit of the San Francisco Fire sufferers of 1906. Well, if Mr. Harris and Geo. M. Cohan collected twelve grand for the survivors of the Big Fire not a sou [sic] markee of the money ever reached Frisco. I covered the Mayors office, here for the Chronicle following the Fire, thru which all money passed for relief from all over the world and if any was earmarked from Harris and Cohan I would certainly have seen it. […] The only thing that Cohan said at that time that I remember was a beef about Frisco being a Hick town because every seat in his show wasent [sic] filled. I don't know whether his manner has mellowed with the years but in those days he was a typical swell head-churl and cad of the same type as Douglas Fairbanks Sr. in his attitude toward Newspapermen." John G. Lawlor was a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and an attorney. He was a District Attorney employee and later served as appellant in the 1917 case of People v. Mooney. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Horizontal and vertical folds. Ink notes on second page. Otherwise, fine condition.
