quotes in a collection of famous quotations. Signed at the bottom of a Typed
Letter signed: "Theron C. Liddle", Salt Lake City, Utah, August 26, 1968.
Deseret News letterhead, written to Mr. John Mason Brown, New York City,
New York, in part: "My wife and I are preparing for publication a collection of
famous inspirational quotes … Most of the quotes being used are in the public
domain, but we did want to use some quotes attributed to you, and we would like
to have your permission to such use. The quotes which we would like to use are the
following and would appear in this manner: The mind is a wonderful thing. It
starts working the minute you are born and never stops until you get up to speak in
public … Friendship should be a private pleasure, not a public boast. First-naming
for effect makes me cringe … We would appreciate your permission to publish the
above quotations with credit to you" Printed text at lower margin reads: Reprint
approval granted: "John Mason Brown", with a typed note from Brown below
"gladly, with one request - a copy of the book when it is published September 3,
1968" Author and drama critic John Mason Brown (1900-1969), whose To All
Hands (1943) related his naval experiences during World War II, wrote a
column, "Seeing Things," for the Saturday Review from 1944 until his death.
Theron C. Liddle (1912-1977) was a writer who published a series titled A
Thought for Today throughout the 1960s, encompassing a total of five volumes.
He was managing editor at the Deseret News from 1949-1971. Normal mailing
folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
