In full: "Frank Hammond, a bookseller in Sutton Colefield, England, recently sent me his latest catalogue of 'choice & interesting books'. An artist friend here tells me that item 182, 'Women Painters of the World from the time of Caterina Vigri, 1414-1463, to Rosa Bonheur and the present day (1905) is a volume that really is choice and interesting; so, thinking that you, too, may find it so I have asked Hammond to send it to you direct. However it may be, and such as it is, it comes to you with my love. And now I must apologise to you and Marvin for not thanking you long before this for your kindness to me. It was grand of you to let me meet your friends that day, and I still relish that most delectable dinner afterwards at the Yacht Club. Marvin's hearty hospitality lingers with me. I suppose that by now you have completed your interior decorating, and established yourself in your new studio where, I like to think, you are happy with it all. My love to you both." In the year he wrote this letter, Carroll was appearing as Alexander Waverly on both The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968) and The Girl From U.N.C.L.E (1966-1967), becoming one of the first actors to play the same character on two different TV series. His other TV work included the title character in the sitcom, Topper (1953-1955). English actor Leo G. Carroll (1892-1972), who usually played shy, self-effacing Englishmen, was reportedly a favorite of Alfred Hitchcock. He appeared in six of Hitchcock's films, including Spellbound and North by Northwest. WILLA GRAY MARTIN was an artist whose works include depictions of such notables as Woody Guthrie.
