LOUIS ADAMIC
Black and white publicity photograph of Louis Adamic in a suit and tie.
Photograph signed: "Louis Adamic 1942". B/w, 4x6¼. Lightly creased at upper right margin. Minor surface creases and striations (not evident head on). Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Accompanied by typed letter of transmittal signed by Adamic's assistant. Milford, New Jersey, 1942 March 18. On Adamic's personal letterhead to Mr. Wishnefsky. In full: "Mr Adamic has been 'drafted' by the Government to work with King Vidor on a movie which certain Washington officials desire to have produced as quickly as possible, and he is in the west working terribly hard. I hesitate to ask his opinion about what kind of writing authors should engage in during the war until he has a little leisure. Personally, I should think they will write what is in them to write; if they are deeply affected by the war, it will show in their work. But can a writer write according to someone else's idea of what his material ought to be? I wonder. Mr Adamic will appreciate your kindness in seeking his opinion, and will regret that circumstances prevent his answering you himself immediately." Slightly creased. Fine condition. Although we could find no reference to a King Vidor/Louis Adamic film collaboration, in 1942, Adamic wrote a script for Treasury Star Parade, a series of radio dramas featuring the stars of radio and film that were aired to raise money for War Bonds. Author and journalist Adamic (1899-1951), born in what is today Slovenia, is best known for chronicling the experiences of American minorities, especially immigrants. His works include My America, 1928-1938 (1938), From Many Lands (1940) and A Nation of Nations (1945), the autobiographical The Native's Return and My Native Land (both 1934, detailing his visit to Yugoslavia) and Dinner at the White House (1946). Two items.
