IAN FRASER
Envelope signed by the diver, winner of the Victoria Cross
Envelope signed: "Ian Fraser/VC.JP.", 6½x3½. Envelope with 15-cent US flag stamp, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 13, 1979. Merchant seaman Ian Edward Fraser (1920-2008) volunteered for the Royal Navy at the outset of World War II. After submarine duty, he took frogman training, and won a Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military honor, on a dangerous mission in July 1945. Piloting a midget submarine through a minefield at Singapore harbor, he exited the sub and placed mines on the hull of a Japanese cruiser, escaping after badly damaging the Japanese vessel. Fraser helped to popularize the new sport of scuba diving in Britain after the war, and retired from the naval reserve as a lieutenant commander in 1965. He also served as a Justice of the Peace, hence the "VC.JP" in the signature. Fraser's autobiography Frogman VC, was published in 1957. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
