LUIS SAGI-VELA
The Zarzuela singer poses at his desk in 9¼x7½ photograph, on which rests a picture of his famous father, signs his name in blue ink
Photograph signed: "S Vela" in blue ink. Sepia, 9¼x7½. Legendary star tenor-baritone Luis Sagi-Vela (1914-2013) was the eldest son of the baritone great Emilio Sagi Barba and his soprano wife Luisa Vela, and made his singing debut in the zarzuela show La rosa del azafran (The Saffron Flower) at the age of eighteen and overnight became a Hispanic stage star. Zarzuela, the Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternated between spoken and sung scenes was perfect for Sagi-Vela, who appeared in shows such as Guerro's El ama, Sorozabal's La del manojo de rosas, and Alonso's Me llaman la presumida. During the Spanish Civil War the popular performer self-exiled himself to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he continued his career, even splitting his time between there and Spain after the war was over. Deep crease in bottom margin. Light surface creases. Corners rounded. Embossed letters in bottom margin. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Worn and slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
