M. EMMETT WALSH
Handwritten, signed letter signed by the actor thanking the recipient for one dollar to
pay for postage, saying that it won't be necessary as he can fit the expense into his
"advertising budget". He goes on to bring attention to a claddagh ring in a picture he's
sending. Extremely rare!
Autograph letter signed: "M. Emmett Walsh", in blue ink, 5¾x8¼. January 6, 1986. In full:
"Dear Peter, Thanks for your note and the U.S. dollar bill - it's very considerate but I'll
somehow fit the postage expense into my advertising budget. The standing picture has me
wearing a claddagh ring which I call to your attention [not included]. Anyway, thanks for
your interest in my work and best wishes for the New Year. Sincerely". In part: "That M. is
for Michael". Critic Roger Ebert so admires character actor M. Emmet Walsh (1935-2024)
that he created the Stanton-Walsh rule: "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or
M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad." Walsh, who made his film debut
in 1969's Midnight Cowboy, has appeared in a long list of feature films, including Alice's
Restaurant (1969), What's Up Doc? (1972), Serpico (1973), Ordinary People (1980), Blade
Runner (1982), Silkwood (1983), Blood Simple (1984), Fletch (1985), Raising Arizona
(1987), Wild Wild West (1999) and Christmas with the Kranks (2004, in which he plays the
neighbor of Tim Allen; in Allen's TV series, Home Improvement, Walsh played his
father-in-law). Walsh, who often plays southern characters, although he was born in New
York, has also appeared in a number of TV movies and has guest starred on several TV
series, from N.Y.P.D. (1969) to The Guardian (2003). Corners slightly worn. Slight surface
creases. Fine condition.
