MAL WHITFIELD
The first on active military duty to win an Olympic Gold medal pens his accomplishments on this printed card
Printed card signed in ink: "Yours in Sports/Mal Whitfield/USA Olympian/1948  London, England/1952 Helsinki, Finland/May 28, 1998", 5x3½. Captioned: "Sports Legend", with sports icons at left and right edges. Black American track and field star Malvin Greston "Mal" Whitfield (1924-2015) won gold medals in the 800 meters at both the 1948 and 1952 Olympic games. He also won a gold medal as a member of the 400-meter relay team and a bronze for his finish in the 400 meters in 1948 and a silver as a member of the 400-meter relay team in 1952. That year, Whitfield, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force (he was a veteran of the Korean War) became the first person to win a gold medal while on active duty. In 1954, Whitfield won the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, becoming the first Black athlete to win the honor, given to the outstanding amateur athlete in the country. After his successful athletic career, Whitfield became a diplomat, conducting sports clinics in Africa and leading a training camp for runners in Ethiopia. Fine condition.
