MARC CHAGALL
Ceramic art as poetry.
Typed Poem signed: "Marc Chagall" in black crayon, 1p, 7¼x10½. Titled: "Ceramics". In full: "In ceramics/what do I bring/to the material,/to the Lord's earth,/to the Lord's fire,/to the leaf,/the bark, the light?/Perhaps the memory of my father,/of my mother, of my childhood,/and my people during a thousand years…./Perhaps also my heart,/One must be humble before the material,/submissive!/The material is natural./and everything that is natural/is religious./It is when he is in a minority before nature that/the artist has the most luck with it, if he is/submissive." In his town of Vitebsk, Russia (now Belarus), Marc Chagall learned the violin, was given singing lessons and, from an early age, drew and wrote poetry. The Chagalls were devout Hassidic Jews. In 1910, 23-year-old Marc Chagall moved to Paris. The images of childhood memories float through many of his works. After spending the years 1941-1948 in New York, Chagall returned to France where he discovered ceramics, sculpture and stained glass. He painted and sculpted on clay in Vallauris in the south of France. Because none of his work was made into editions, Chagall ceramics are extremely rare as are signed examples of his poetry. Lightly creased at upper margin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 27 x 15¼.
