MARIE WILSON
Marie Wilson sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter on her role in "Boy Meets Girl".
Typed Letter Signed: "Marie Wilson", 1p, 5¼x6½. Burbank, California, 1939 January 2. On sheet imprinted with her name to "Dear Elsa". In full: "I received your letter and enjoyed it so much. I'm glad you liked my role in 'Boy Meets Girl'. 'Sweepstakes Winner' was completed. I'm working over at 20th Century now in 'Rose of Washington Square' with Alice Faye, Tyrone Power and Al Jolson. Must be brief this time, but I'm sending the photo. Love". Date written in pencil (unknown hand) on verso. Photograph not present. With original stamped mailing envelope with typed address to Elsa Lang in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Boy Meets Girl, in which Wilson starred as Mrs. Susan "Susie" Seabrook, was released in 1938. In 1939, Wilson was seen on the big screen in Sweepstakes Winner (as Jennie Jones), mentioned in this letter, Waterfront, Should Husbands Work? and Cowboy Quarterback. Although she mentions Rose of Washington Square in this letter, Wilson is not listed in the film's credits. Comic actress Marie Wilson (1916-1972), born Katherine Elizabeth Wilson, was best known for playing Irma Peterson in the radio (1947), film (1949) and television (1952-1954) versions of My Friend Irma (1949) and its 1950 film sequel, My Friend Irma Goes West. A former Broadway dancer, Wilson made her film debut in the 1934 Laurel & Hardy film, Babes in Toyland, before signing a contract with Warner Bros. and appearing as the scatterbrained "dumb blonde" in scores of comedies, including Satan Met a Lady (1936) and Boy Meets Girl (1938). Her other films include China Clipper (1936), She's In the Army (1942), Shine On Harvest Moon (1944), A Girl in Every Port (1952) and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962). In 1944, Wilson was hired to perform a comedy striptease in Ken Murray's Hollywood stage revue, Blackouts. She performed her act in 2,332 performances over the next five years, and Wilson would return to the stage when her film career waned. She also appeared in nightclubs and made guest appearances on a number of TV series, including Where's Huddles (1970, voice) and Love, American Style (1972). Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Light paper clip impression at upper margin touches imprinted name. Fine condition.
