MARSHALL P. WILDER
Words of wisdom from the successful merchant, politician and horticulturalist
Autograph Quotation signed: "Be just and fear not! So shalt/thou rejoice in the favor of/God & Man.Marshall P. Wilder/Dorchester/August 26, 1877",6¾x4. Marshall P. Wilder (1798-1886), a very successful Boston dry goods merchant, had even greater success as an amateur horticulturalist. At his Hawthorne Grove estate, he cultivated prize-winning flowers and successfully transplanted from Europe two of the most popular pear varieties: Bartlett and Anjou. A founder of the New England Horticultural Society, he served as its President from 1840 to 1848. As a Massachusetts state legislator, including a year as Senate President (1850), he pushed aggressively for creation of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, and supported the foundation of MIT only after being assured it would offer horticultural courses. He founded the American Pomological Society (1848), the oldest fruit organization in North America. His grand nephew was the celebrated actor Marshall P. Wilder. Fine condition.
