MAX PATKIN
Handwritten note by "the Clown Prince of Baseball"
Autograph Note signed: "Two my new dearest/Friend/Joe Hillis:
-/Max Patkin", 5½x4¼. Max Patkin (1920-1999), his minor league career
curtailed by injuries, was pitching for the US Navy when tagged for a home run
by Joe Dimaggio in 1944. Patkin threw down his glove in mock disgust and ran
around the bases after Joe D. The crowd loved it, and Patkin's half-century
career as a baseball clown was born. Eccentric Cleveland Indians owner
Bill Veeck - who else? - hired Patkin as a coach in the 1940s. (Knowing the
game, Patkin actually coached base runners while entertaining fans with his
antics.) In 1949, Patkin began barnstorming, performing before stadium crowds
all over the country and in the movie Bull Durham (1988). Fine
