Signature: "Abram S. Hewitt/N.Y.", 7¼x2. Abram S. Hewitt
(1822-1903) was the son-in-law of industrialist/philanthropist Peter
Cooper, and with Cooper's son Edward established the Trenton Iron Works
in 1845, and later introduced the open hearth process for manufacturing
steel. He supervised construction of the Cooper Union, Peter Cooper's
institution for workingmen's education, and remained chairman of its board until
his death. Hewitt worked closely with New York Governor Samuel Tilden to
combat the Tweed Ring, served five terms in the US Congress (1875-1885), chaired
the Democratic National Committee, and managed Tilden's nearly successful
Presidential campaign of 1876. He was elected Mayor of New York in an
interesting three way race with single-tax advocate Henry George and the young
Republican candidate, Theodore Roosevelt. As Mayor of New York
(1886-1887), Hewitt alienated many with his nativist views, refusing to
march in the St Patrick's Day Parade, but he expanded the civil service,
improved the City's finances, and earned the laurel "Father of the New York
subway system". Irregularly cut. Shaded at edges, irregular left edge from
