JOHN V. LINDSAY
Congressman John Lindsay responds regarding a Veterans of WWI pensions & recognition of Red China
Typed Letter Signed: "John V. Lindsay" and "J.V.L" as U.S. Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1960 August 9. On letterhead of Congress of the United States House of Representatives. To: Mr. Floyd I Silk, Disabled American Veterans, New York, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Silk: Thank you for your letter of recent date expressing your support for legislation to give a $100.00 pension to Vererans (sic) of World War I, regardless of their annual income. The discharge petition on this bill cannot be signed before August 15 as the House is in recess until that date. In the meantime, I intend to carefully study this pro-posal. I can assure you, as a veteran of World War II, I am most sympathetic towards the problems confronting our veterans and have their interests very much at heart. Sincerely yours, P.S. I have also received a letter from the National Veterans' Political Action Committee, of which you are a member. In the interests of time, I hope you will accept this letter as my answer to the memorandum from the VPAC. My position on recognition of Red China is that I am opposed to recognition." John Vliet Lindsay (1921-2000) was Mayor of New York City from 1966-1973. Lindsay, who had previously served as a U.S. Congressman from New York (1959-1965), received one delegate vote on the first ballot at the 1968 Republican National Convention. He became a Democrat in 1971 and ran a short-lived campaign for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination. A veteran of WWII, Lindsay had practiced law before entering politics.Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
