The Croatian-born prima ballerina is shown from the chest up in this 7x5 black and white photograph.
Photograph signed: "Mia Slavenska", B/w 7x5. Mia Slavenksa (1916-2002) was a Croatian-born prima ballerina. She began dancing at the age of 4, and made her professional debut in 1924. At the age of 17, she became the Zagred Opera's prima ballerina, and in 1936 she performed at the Berlin dance Olympics. She was the leading ballerina of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo for several years and moved to the U.S. with the ballet company. In 1944, she formed her own ballet company, Ballet Variante and in 1950 she founded the Slavenska Franklin Ballet Company. A Prima Ballerina for the New York Metropolitan Opera (1944-1945) and professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (1969-1983), she also appeared in films like Ballerina (1937) and The Great Waltz (1955). Slightly soiled at bottom right. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
