MICHAEL YORK
Poem asking, is Art not Love?
Autograph Poem signed: "Michael York" at end, 1 page 7¼x10½. On personal letterhead addressed "J.H to M.Y".In Full: "Is Art not Love in one vast gesture made Thru forms, conditions, limitations - art Thou expectations, public on parade And each one certain strong and seminal? We are the point, the paper, and the line, And, bound or boundless, lay the limits down To challenge maybe even the divine And ask to win, by deeds, life's golden crown For what is Art is done within the heart By bone and sinew and the 'Spirit's' need to build Art's empire making self a part But self directed by the cosmic seed That lays down all with splendid emphasis. Confess and truly speak. Is Art not this?" In 1967, virtually unknown 25-year-old British actor Michael York was cast as Lucentio in TheTaming of the Shrew opposite Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor and Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1968). Over a 30-year span, York played key roles in adaptations (on the big screen and on TV) of such literary classics as Great Expectatrions, David Copperfield, Jesus of Nazareth (as John the Baptist), The Three Musketeers (as d'Artagnan), The Island of Dr. Moreau, Much Ado About Nothing, Lost Horizon, Murder on the Orient Express, all three Austin Powers films (as Basil Exposition), and The Omega Code and prequel (as the Anti-Christ). He has been a voice actor in many animated films. York graduated from Oxford University, to which he has promised his scripts, and was active in drama there. Fine condition.
