MILTON J. DURHAM
The first ever U.S. Comptroller of the Treasury signs his name and
title in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours/ M.J. Durham/ 1st
Comptroller" in black ink. 6¾x3 clipping. Milton J. Durham
(1824-1911) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky who served two terms
in Congress, during which time he served on the House Committees on Banking
and Currency, Coinage, and Weights and Measures, as well as chairman of the
House Committees on Appropriations and Revision of the Laws. Furthermore, he
served on committees investigating the failure of the First Bank of the United
States, alleged fraud in the Western Judicial District of Arkansas, the accounts
of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the condition of the Freedman's
Savings and Trust Company. He lost re-election in 1878, but in 1885 was
elected by President Grover Cleveland as the first-ever Comptroller of the
Treasury of the U.S., a position he held through the end of Cleveland's
presidency in 1889. After contracting influenza, Durham left his Danville
law practice and moved to Lexington, where he served as an officer in the Bank
of Lexington and the Lexington IRS until his death. Irregularly cut. Toned. Torn
