NELSON EDDY. TLS: "Nelson Eddy", 1p, 7x10½. Beverly Hills, California, 1944 July 8. On letterhead imprinted with his name to Mrs. T. Bishop Sovereign, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "You were indeed kind to make me such a generous offer. I appreciate it very much. I cannot accept the etchings, because they may be appreciated by someone else more than I. I am, however, interested in the records. I wonder if you contemplate selling them! If you do I would be very grateful if you would let me know their value, so that I might see if I could afford them. With many thanks, I am, Very sincerely yours." With original typed, stamped envelope. Nelson Eddy (1901-1967) performed with the Metropolitan Opera (1924) and was heard in concert and on radio in the early 1930s. Beginning in 1935, he joined Jeanette MacDonald in a singing duo, commonly called "the Singing Sweethearts", which scored one smash hit film musical after another through 1942, including Naughty Marietta, Rose Marie and Let Freedom Ring. Eddy's version of The Phantom of the Opera (1943) co-starred Susanna Foster and Claude Rains. Knickerbocker Holiday, based on the stage musical, is set in 1650 New Amsterdam. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold underlines signature. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
